The melon (Cucumis melo) is a monoecious herbaceous plant with creeping vines. It is grown for its fruit, a summer berry that is high in water content and sweet tasting.
The shape of the fruit ranges from round to ellipsoidal. The colour of the skin and pulp varies, depending on the group. The skin is usually white, grey, greenish or yellow, and either smooth, rough or reticulated in texture. The pulp is aromatic, soft-textured and can be in several different colours: yellow, green, pink and intermediate shades. The seeds, coated in a sticky substance, are in a hollow in the centre of the fruit.
Nutritionally, it is low in sodium, fat and cholesterol. It is a good source of vitamin B6, folic acid and potassium, and very high in vitamin C.
